    The evolution of Spain’s energy mix has reached a turning point. With unprecedented penetration of renewable sources, the challenge for 2026 is no longer only generation capacity, but management capacity. In this context, energy storage has established itself as the master piece for turning the natural intermittency of sun and wind into firm, manageable and, above all, profitable energy for industry and for the electricity system.

    Engineering and environmental consultancy no longer focus their efforts exclusively on «how to generate more», but on a far more complex challenge: how to give the system flexibility. Storage, led by industrial-scale battery systems (BESS), is today the indispensable tool for guaranteeing energy independence and market stability.

    Asset optimisation in a mature market

    The success of photovoltaics in Spain has created a situation where production is often concentrated in the same time bands, causing a saturation of supply. For a company with renewable installations, this means that the energy generated has very little value if it cannot be consumed or fed into the grid at the right moment.

    This is where storage systems engineering makes the difference. Storage enables «load shifting» or load displacement: capturing energy when the resource is abundant and its opportunity cost is low, in order to inject it when demand is high and the system needs support. This capability not only optimises the return on investment (ROI) of projects, it is also essential for the full decarbonisation of industry, which requires a constant, stable supply.

    Key technologies: From lithium to hybridisation

    Recently, the range of technologies has diversified to suit each specific need. The choice of technology is critical to the viability of the project:

    1. Lithium batteries (Li-ion): They remain the standard for fast response and high energy density, ideal for frequency regulation and industrial self-consumption.
    2. Redox flow batteries: They have gained ground in applications requiring long-duration storage (more than 4 hours), offering a longer service life and almost zero degradation.
    3. Plant hybridisation: Combining wind generation, photovoltaics and batteries at a single connection point makes it possible to make the most of existing grid capacity, minimising administrative permitting and maximising the efficiency of evacuation.

    More than energy: balancing and stability services

    A modern storage system is much more than a safety reserve; it is a dynamic asset. Industrial batteries play a fundamental role in grid balancing services, providing regulation services that maintain the frequency and voltage of the electricity system.

    These services, managed by the system operator, allow installations to obtain additional income while helping to avoid supply cuts or instabilities. With the new regulatory framework, the Capacity Market Capacity mechanisms rewards those companies that bring firmness to the system, turning sustainability into a direct competitive advantage.

    The role of engineering and specialist consultancy

    The design of a storage system is a high-precision engineering process. At auma, we understand that the success of these installations does not depend only on technology, but on a comprehensive analysis:

    • Audit of consumption profiles: Exactly how and when the client consumes energy is analysed in order to size the system optimally.

    • Safety and the environment: Everything from fire protection to compliance with environmental legislation and the future recycling of components has to be supervised, ensuring a project aligned with the circular economy.
